Physical symptoms are data points for us

They signal what is going on with the body and these symptoms may not go away, as much as we try to ignore them. One of the quick self-care tips that I work with my clients is to check in with our bodies and tend to what is going on by asking one quick question, “What do I need right now?”. When we become aware and mindful, we can choose to address these signs and symptoms and learn to take better care of ourselves.

I think we just have to accept that there has to be a balance. We can set goals and take them in any direction we want, but we also have to accept the outcomes of our decisions. There are ripple effects to every decision we make, some may be expected or intentional, and others won’t be. There are some things we never will have control over, and those things are not as important as they seem.

By Caitlin Kelly

It’s what I do when I’m angry, bored or stressed — and boy, does the apartment look great!

Silverplate polished, windows washed, rugs vacuumed, counters scrubbed, stove-top gleaming…

But this is also a time in my life, long overdue, of cleaning house in the rest of my life:

Ditching worn-out friendships

Time to lose people with whom I have little in common now beyond some shared history but little joy and pleasure in their company — and likely, theirs in mine. I’ve allowed too many unsatisfying relationships to masquerade as friendship. And my cancer diagnosis and treatment, inevitably, quickly thinned the herd of people I once considered friends, but who couldn’t spare a minute for a call, email, card or visit. Here’s a powerful essay on the subject from Thought Catalog.

Knowing what you will be doing is a great energy-balancer

drained, energy, food, list, plan, tired

Sometimes, you run low-grade fever, find a rasp in your voice, experience irritable mood-swings, a stomach upset and disturbed, restless sleep. Your days go numbly nowhere. All you want to do is lie down and sleep.

This is chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) normally caused due to over-use of strong antibiotics that have destroyed the digestive intestinal flora in the colon. Simply put, it’s an energy crisis. The first thing to do is get onto a strengthening vegetarian diet to put less strain on the system. Daily, have four to six servings of: *Whole grains, pulses, fresh…

Loneliness Epidemic

Sociologists have long been warning about the dangers of increased isolation thanks to aging populations, scattered families, and cultures that promote the individual over the collective. Now, new research analyzing previous studies suggests people who fall into the loneliness trap are 50% more likely to suffer an early death than those who remain socially connected.

This is one time during the year when we usually have a chance to partake of a buffet meal or two. If you are like me, you want to try everything and plenty of it. Here are a few things to consider when buffet dining:

  • The key is to make the right choices along with listening to your hunger cues , so you don’t eat more than you really need.
  • Select leaner protein dishes such as chicken or fish.
  • Skip dishes that have double protein, such as bacon-wrapped scallops.
  • To minimize extra sodium, fat and calories, avoid dishes that are swimming in sauce.
  • To limit fat and calories, stay away from fried items.
  • Look for whole grains, which have fiber and will make you feel full.
  • Select dishes that incorporate cooked or raw vegetables.
  • Have a light snack (carrots and humus, apple and peanut butter, etc) before you go to…
